People live in the public arena together. As indicated by the U.S. Constitution, all men are made equivalent, and in this way incorporates ladies. In spite of the fact that everybody is viewed as equivalent, history of ladies in the military demonstrates extraordinary. Essay Topics For The Millers Tale

Essay Topics For 'The Millers Tale'The essay topics for 'The Millers Tale' are critical. You should have a good idea of what your essay is going to be about before you begin. The topics that I provide in this essay are designed to bring your essay up to date and help you become more knowledgeable. The first topic is the topic of the theme. You will use this topic to explain how you came to know about the story. It also helps to show your ability to follow directions, focus on a particular topic, and follow through with a plan. It also shows that you are organized, clear, and sharp in your thinking.Your second topic is the theme that you want to have in your story. I like to use both situations and characters to explain what makes one stand out from the other. Then I move to the structure of the story. You will use this topic to show how you will be using events to illustrate the theme.Your third topic is the theme that you have built into your story. I like to talk about themes such a s war, medicine, religion, and everyday life. These themes all can relate to each other. Having themes is a good way to create a better storyline.Your fourth topic is the theme that characterizes each character. For example, the theme of the war hero is shared by both Marlowe and Horatio. That theme is embodied in both of them, but is unique to each. If you write that Marlowe is a war hero and Horatio was a war hero, then the theme you will create with your essay is not unique to either of them.Your fifth topic is the theme that most of the action in your story takes place. Often, the action that happens in an action film is stylized to fit into the story. You can play around with that in your essay as well. If you find yourself writing 'scene breaks' when describing the action, then you may want to switch to something more descriptive.Your last essay topics are the themes that tie all of your different topics together. The themes should be related to each other but do not connect e ach of them. Themes should blend well together, and you can do this by using different styles of writing. Try to always have one or two scenes in your essay where you explain how the theme is manifested. When you choose your essay topics, you should choose the topics that will bring the story together. Make sure you use proper grammar and a structure that will make it easy for you to follow. Use your essay topics to make sure you are clear about your topic, and to make sure your story has the theme you want.

Whats Cooking Film Analysis - Free Essay Example

Abstract The film, Whats Cooking , was created and directed by Gurinder Chadha, and released in year 2000. In the movie, we see the day in the life of four culturally different families on Thanksgiving day. The families depicted in the film include a hispanic family, a jewish family, an african american family, as well as an asian, specifically from vietnam. Due to their diverse backgrounds the families experience a different form of Thanksgiving from the food, their beliefs, and relationships. For our first concept we will be discussing homosexuality (Chapter 6, pages 155-165), specifically the accpetance of homosexualoty within the jewish community. Homosexuality is defined as, of, relating to, or characterized by a tendency to direct sexual desire toward another of the same sex. based on the Merriam-Webster definition of homozexuality. In the movie, we see two girls meeting each other at the airport, Rachel and Carla. Its not obvious that the two are in a relationship at the beginning since Rachel quotes, Im not exactly in a hurry, sis. after a woman at the airport assumes the two women are sisters. As the movie progresses, you begin to see the relationship between the women grow. In one scene the women push the beds together so the two can sleep together and cuddle during the night. You can also see the struggle between the characters as they debate whether or not to be open about their relationship and if family Rachels family will accept them for who they are. Since Rachels family follows the jewish religion they struggle with the fact that their daughter is in a relationship with another woman. You can tell the parents are uncomfortable because they question where they went wrong as parents and even go so far to provide the girls with seperate beds in Rachels room. In our second concept we will be discussing respect in Asian culture (Chapters 2 5, pages 50-52, 141-143). In most of asian culture respect is highly valued, especially respect towards older members within your family. The movie shows us a family that has moved to the United States from vietnam. The family consists of the mother (Trinh) and father (Duc), along with their four children Jimmy, Jenny, Gary, and Joey. The family also consists of extended members such as Ducs mother and father. Jimmy is the oldest child of the family and is currently away at college. Jimmy is highly respected by both his parents and siblings as he fulfills his role of going off to college to obtain a better education. Jimmy is praised by his mother whereas Jenny and Gary are not as praised.Tinah feels as though her children are becoming too Americanized as her children begin to act inappropriately in her eyes with Gary bringing home a gun and Jenny having a condom in her backpack. She feels some sort of disappointment and looks towards Jimmy for some sort of advice because he was the son that always did the right thing and respected his older members. The final concept being discussed is traditional gender roles in the hispanic community (Chapter 2 5, pages 42-50, 136-138). Early traditional gender roles in the United States consisted of separate spheres, a mans sphere where he worked outside of the home to provide for the family and a womans sphere where she mainly stayed with in the home to clean the house and care for the children. While the hispanic family in the movie didnt stick strictly to these specific roles, you can see where the family followed similar rules during the modern times. For example, on Thanksgiving day most of the women in Lizzys family were in the kitchen preparing the meal while most of the men in her family were in the living room watching some sort of sports on tv. The family even teased Jimmy at bit while he was in the kitchen helping the family to prepare dinner. The women of the family also catered to Jimmy a bit. When he first arrived Lizzy had asked her family to get supplies for Jimmy so he could go and wash up before dinner Social Institution is defined as a set of roles and rules that define a social unit of importance to society. based on the Public and Private Families: An Introduction by Cherlin (Chapter 1 page 29). A social institution provides families with their roles with in a certain institution along with the rules that help guide us to fulfilling those roles. The social institution well look further into is Education. Education is an important institution as it helps humans obtain knowledge in order for us to progress further. It teaches us both basic skill and extended skills for us to function a society. One example of a role in this institution is the Board of Education. The Board of Education is what makes our schools function. They take the laws from their state and determine the best plan of action for teaching the future generations. Using the feedback from each year, the board can determine what plans work for our students and what rules failed. Another role in the education institution are the teachers. Teachers are the individuals that take the important information we need and communicate that information with the students, the individuals who learn the information. They are responsible for making sure each student has the knowledge to progress further into their education as well as their life. In the movie, we can see that the vietnamese family values education and it is seen as a role that needs to be fulfill. The family is obviously very proud that Jimmy is a student away at college. However, the family is disappointed to know that Jimmy would not be returning home for Thanksgiving due to having too much work to complete for his finals. While his mother, Trinh, misses Jimmy and checks on him several times during Thanksgiving she respects the fact that his education comes first as it is his role to do well in school as a student. Through watching the film, Whats cooking, I have gained more understanding of cultures that are different from my own through a common holiday most of us practice in the United States of America. It has opened my eyes that while I may celebrate Thanksgiving through what we call the more traditional way based on traditional meals, such as the idea of turkey, mashed potatoes, and dressing, and settings, that the family down the street from me may experience the holiday in a a completely different manner. With that understanding in mind, I can apply it to all aspects of life knowing that how I go about my day is completely different from the individuals next to me or the individual on the other side of the world. I now understand the struggle of the acceptance of homosexuality in the Jewish community portrayed by Rachel and Carlas relationship. I gained more knowledge on why the respect for elders in asian culture is very important and the effects that go along with obeying that rule. I think I would like to expand my understanding of respect in Asian culture and to know more about why that doesnt apply as much in most western countries. Like what keeps most western cultures from feeling the need to not follow such a rule. Also, I understand how traditional family roles this affect families till this day. Finally, I learned more about the importance of education as a social institution as its role is to teach us the skills to be a functioning society. The Controversy Of Homosexuality Sparks Controversy

Introduction: In every corner of the world, the topic of homosexuality sparks controversy from both supporters and opponents of the sexual orientation. Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines a homosexual as â€Å"being sexually attracted to people of the same sex.† The underlying influence from historical, sociological, and health disciplines are just a few reasons such a large gap exists on the spectrum between supporters and opponents of homosexuality. This paper serves as an analysis of the previously mentioned disciplines with gathered data from a variety of scholarly journals. Based on the grounds of historical, sociological, and health disciplines, it would be far too ethnocentric, discriminatory, and physically unhealthy for society to reject homosexuality as an individual’s choice in a way of life. Historical Perspective: When viewing the United States’ acceptance of homosexuality there have been spikes and plateaus in its progression. Today, a majority of the states in the nation allow same-sex marriage; however, in some of these states, homosexual couples are not able to receive the same Social Security benefits as heterosexual couples (Mushovic, 2011). This clearly demonstrates that although the nation has made great strides in treating homosexuals as equals, there is still some sanding around the edges that needs to be performed. When viewed in this aspect, it is seen that progress for homosexuals to be treated as equals is being made slowly, but surely.Show MoreRelatedMain Theme Of Giovannis Room1219 Words   |  5 Pagesauthor; he wrote literature in the form of novels, short stories, essays, and literary criticism. Inevitable Cold War On The United States And The Soviet War

Unavoidable Cold War Irina Shemetova History 12 Chris Nielsen, PhD June 13, 2015 Unavoidable Cold War The phrase cold war is associated with the so-called competition of the United States and the USSR, which began almost immediately after the Second World War. The Soviet Union was in fact a serious competitor to the United States in terms of the international prestige and as one of the most influential superpowers of the world at that time. Instead, the partnership between the victor countries soon turned into an indirect, cold war. Despite the scale and actuality, this subject is studied a little, and is not quite fully covered in the historical literature. Cold War was unavoidable because of Stalin s mistrust after U.S. intervention in 1918, Churchill s Unthinkable operation and his speech in Fulton and also Truman s friendship with Churchill, his Marshall Plan and offensive comments. Many people think that American troops have never fought on the Russian land. However, in September 1918, the 339th Regiment of American Infantry disembarked at the port of Archangel, in the North of the newly formed Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Multi-national forces of the Triple Entente, including Americans and British, arrived to the North to support the White army. However, troops were not aware of this fact. What Is the Definition of Impasto in Art

A painting technique, impasto is a thick application of paint that does not attempt to look smooth. Instead, impasto is unabashedly proud to be textured and  exists to show off brush and palette knife marks. Just think of nearly any Vincent van Gogh painting to get a good visual. The Impasto Effect on Paintings Traditionally, artists strive for clean, smooth brushstrokes that are almost mirror-like. This is not the case with impasto. It is a technique that thrives on expressive textures of thick paint that pop out from the work. Impasto is most often created with oil paints as it is one of the thickest paints available. Artists can, however, use a medium in acrylic paints to get a similar effect. The paint may be applied with a brush or a paint knife in thick globs that are spread onto the canvas or board. Impasto painters quickly learn that the less you work the paint, the better the result. If one were to touch the paint with a brush or knife repeatedly, it works itself into the canvas, becoming duller and flatter with each stroke. Therefore, for impasto to have the greatest effect, it must be applied with deliberation. Its easy to see the relief of impasto paint when a piece is viewed from the side. When looking straight at the piece, it will have shadows and highlights around every brush or knife stroke. The heavier the impasto is, the deeper the shadows are. All of this creates a three-dimensional look to the painting, and it can bring a piece to life. Impasto painters enjoy giving their pieces depth, and it can add a great emphasis to the work. Impasto is often referred to as a  painterly  style in that it celebrates rather than downplays the medium. Impasto Paintings Through Time Impasto is not a modern approach to painting. Art historians note that the technique was employed as early as the Renaissance  and Baroque periods by artists such as  Rembrandt, Titian, and Rubens. The texture helped give life to the fabrics many of their subjects wore as well as other elements in the paintings. By the 19th century, impasto became a common technique. Painters like Van Gogh utilized it in almost every piece of work. His swirling brush strokes rely on thick paint to give them dimension and add to the expressive qualities of the work. Indeed, had a piece like The Starry Night (1889) been done with flat paint, it would not be the memorable piece it is. Throughout the centuries, artists have employed impasto in many ways. Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) said, I continue to get further away from the usual painters tools such as easel, palette, brushes, etc. I prefer sticks, trowels, knives and dripping fluid paint or a heavy impasto with sand, broken glass or other foreign matter added.   Frank Auerbach (1931–) is another modern artist who unabashedly uses impasto in his work. Some of his abstract works such as Head of E.O.W. (1960) is exclusively impasto with thick gobs of paint covering the entire wood support. His work brings to life the thought many have that impasto is a painters form of sculpture.

Dickens Symbolism in Hard Times - 4703 Words

Hard Times Symbolism, Imagery Allegory Sometimes, there’s more to Lit than meets the eye. Fairy Palaces and Elephants (a.k.a. Factories and the Machinery inside them) This one is from the narrator and runs throughout the novel: the idea that the ugly, square, fact-based, oppressive mills look like fairy palaces with elephants in them when they are lit up at night. The image first pops up as something a person riding by Coketown in a fast-moving train might say – in other words, someone who doesn t know any better what the reality of the place actually is. It s an idea dripping with irony, since we already know that there is nothing beautiful or magical about the factories. Then, in a pretty neat trick, Fairy Palaces becomes kind†¦show more content†¦So there are subtle symbols, and then there is this one. Let s see if we can decipher the very cryptic meaning here. Literally falling down a giant pit of doom is a little like†¦? Yes, that s right, figuratively falling down a giant pit of doom. Just as Stephen is actually killed because he can t escape from the big hole in the ground he walked into sight unseen, so too is he emoti onally and psychically trapped in his terrible marriage. Or maybe it s the legal system that he is trapped inside – the legal system which won t let him get a divorce? Or maybe it s not his marriage that is the pit of doom, but the way he is treated by the workers who shun him for not joining the union? Are there other possibilities? You decide. Hard Times Setting Where It All Goes Down Coketown, England in the mid-19th century Mid-19th century Victorian England The novel is set in the same time place that it was written – the mid-1800s in England. Because this was the time of Queen Victoria, this period is usually called the Victorian era. We tend to think of Victorian England as stuffy, prudish, and way too uptight about sex. Though the English might have been incredibly conservative in their personal lives in this time, the nation was going through radical changes in other areas. Concert Report (252 words) Essay Concert ReportBill Housmanconcert report #5On the night of Friday April 28th, 2000 I attended a piano recital. A good friend of my mothers named Sarah Goodman, who has been playing the piano since the age of 6 was holding a solo performance in a small concert hall in the upper east side of Manhattan. The hall had capacity for 200 hundred people, however only about 50 or so sat in the front of the room. It was a beautiful hall with huge chandeliers and giant columns. The program was scheduled to run just over an hour as it began at 8:30 p.m. The first piece was recognizable Beethoven, an intense piece that ranged in sounds using many crescendos and de-crescendos to highlight certain parts. Fluctuating through out the entire song the volume seemed to roar than suddenly go silent. Sarah was quite active during this piece her fingers seemed to float over the black and whit keys. While her body would at points flail violently from side to side. It all seemed to be quite emotional for her. At the end of the piece Sarah was rewarded with a short round of applause. The next piece was my favorite, I did not know who it was by, however it was pleasing to my ear. The music had great rhythm and seemed to flow constantly through out the song. The song was dreamy and carried my hand into the air (I kept it quite low) where I sort of Music

Joy of cooking Essay Example For Students

Joy of cooking Essay A creative interest I have is cooking with pastries, seafood and poultry. Preparing food can be fun. All I need is just a little imagination and time. Pastries are dessert that are severed for special occasions and after a meal. Pastries are special due to the fact each one tastes and looks different. The creative format comes from the chef. Since I am the one who cooks in my house, I must prepare each dish tasteful and attractive. For example, I was thinking of a creative cake for my daughtersrsquo birthday. I decide to make her a choo choo train cake. The way I want to present this dish is by making it look like a toy train with zoo animals standing near by. The idea of this dish is to make the train look similar to the candy house in the story, Hansel and Gretel. The first step was to add food coloring to the icing. She was excited. Mommy, can I mix the colors? Next, I decorated the cake board with grated coconut. I add green food coloring to the grated coconut. Jessica said, Mommy, that looks like grass. Then, I decorated the carts of the train with different color icing. For example, I placed green, blue, and red icing on each of the carts. When I finished decorating the carts, I placed them on the black licorice train tracks. When I was finished with placing the carts on the track, Jessica and I arranged assorted candy all over the train. Another creative idea I had was to cook with the children in after school care at William Lehman Elementary. For example, I had decided to make an orange shake with them to celebrate Halloween. The first step I created, was to add orange sherbet ice cream. Next, I add cream soda to the float. When I was finished the shake, I placed one chocolate chip cookie inside of the float. Cooking creativy with seafood is another outstanding process. When cooking shrimp, I must prepare each shrimp to the procedure I want. For example, when preparing Chinese Fried Rice, I cook every item separately. For instance, this dish requires shrimp. This dish I peel each shrimp. Then I season the shrimp with soy sauce. Then, I stir fry them. When I cook this dish, I add everything in a bowl. Once the Chinese rice is cooked, I prepare the platter. For instance, I chop up green onions and place them around the Chinese Rice. Then I slice thin piece of oranges and locate then around the green onion. The shrimps in this platter are tricky to cook. For example, you must have a spatula in one hand. While you are stirring the shrimps, you must move the pan back and forth with the other hand. I do this so the shrimps do not stick to the pan. The specialty in grilled dolphin is the way I present the dish. When I finish preparing the dolphin, I place the fish on platter with yellow rice and raw green peppers. Then I get two raw mushrooms and cut them into quarters. Then, I place them on all sides of the yellow rice. Finally, I place thin slices of lemon around the edge of the plate. A creative way I present the poultry is by cooking and preparing each dish differently. For example, tonight I am preparing sweet and sour chicken on a stick. When I prepare this dish, I get the chicken and cut it into one inch squares. Then I place the chicken on a stick. Between each piece of chicken, I place a pineapple square, green pepper, and a cherry tomato. When I place the white rice in the center of the plate, then I put two chicken sticks on top of the rice. Once the meal is cooked, I add my creativeness. I get sweet an sour sauce and pour in a slow zig zag motion all over the platter. .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d , .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .postImageUrl , .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d , .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:hover , .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:visited , .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:active { border:0!important; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:active , .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0a251ab4239e011d3758cb5cf756fc9d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Give medical care for the homeless Essay Another way I prepare this dish is by mixing all the ingredients together. Why Is Five Page Reflective Essay Topics So Popular?

Why Is Five Page Reflective Essay Topics So Popular? The 5-page reflective essay is a standard for all undergraduate composition courses. It has long been recognized as the basic form of a 'reflective' essay. This essay format is just about as old as the four-page thesis statement. That said, there are many great reasons to make a reflection on a reflective essay. The first and most obvious reason is that the reflective essay is a tried and true format that is highly effective for teaching. With this format, students learn a great deal in one great lecture that they would not otherwise be able to accomplish in the course of a semester. One of the reasons that so many school students leave college without having any experience of any kind in writing can be attributed to their lack of exposure to writing. For all of the writing that we do at school, much of it is nothing more than covering a topic in a general fashion with a title. We get straight to the point and are generally vague abou t what is discussed in the process. While students would find that form of writing interesting, it is no way conducive to learning and being a reader. That is why students have been given an escape route by way of the 5-page reflective essay. Because it is such a large topic that is covered in such a quick and concise manner, it is easy to absorb information from the course. There are many reasons to use a five-page reflective essay. One of the main ones is the fact that students tend to use it as a jumping off point to begin the subject of their thesis statement. In other words, after covering some broad topic, students feel that it is time to move on to the main focal point of the class.Students also tend to utilize the reflective essay as an introduction to the actual main idea of the class. Instead of the student starting their topic with a lengthy explanation of their material, the five-page reflective essay provides the students with an outline of the main concepts of the class. With the outline laid out, the student can then move into explaining how the materials will be used in the real context of the class.Part of the usefulness of the five-page format is that it is often used as a part of the college curriculum. Often times students are given the option to take a course in order to understand more about the subject of their choice. In this way, they can get a general idea of the material that they will be dealing with in the classroom. For all of these reasons, the reflective essay is the most popular and efficient format to introduce students to a topic. By the time that the student has gone through all of the introductory material in class, the reflection topic has already provided them with a tremendous amount of background information and insight to the main topic of the class.

Should I Write an Essay in the USA?

Should I Write an Essay in the USA?Many high school and college students wonder if they should write an essay while in the United States. Some say they don't feel comfortable writing the 'Big Essay' while other students feel that they can't write effectively unless they've written some essays on the other side of the world. It's a good question to ask.I think the biggest difference between writing an essay in the US and abroad is the English language. In fact, English is the only English that I know of that is written almost exclusively in the US. It's also true that the people who live in the US do not write the way people in the UK or Europe do. While writing the essay for school or university is a simple matter of putting down notes and keeping them together, writing an essay for a job interview or for an interview for a post in your company may be a little more difficult. An essay isn't really meant to be so serious, unless it is trying to do something important. Although, I think an essay can do many good things, it is important to take a good look at it, and make sure that you are not doing anything to damage it. As far as writing essays for work go, there is a very short list of things that one can not write.First, no one is going to be interested in your topic if you cannot provide a compelling reason for the topic. The reason for your topic is the first thing people are going to check when they are looking at your essay. If you can't give them something that is worth reading, then you should probably move on to something else.Second, I'd suggest that you read some introductory essays and handouts that have been done on the topic you're writing an essay about. If you can find any samples that you like, by all means, copy them and use them. However, I don't think it will hurt to also do a little bit of research. You will still get your essay done, but you'll learn a lot more than if you just copied someone else's writing.Third, don't put too much thought into the style or organization of your essay. It doesn't really matter what kind of essay it is. If you can stick with the same type of style that you did when you were writing the essays for school. Keep the same tone and style as the other examples that you found. In fact, you might even get more out of an essay if you go with an article format.Fourth, when you write, try to write out in the same way that you wrote in class, except that you will probably use the short version of your essay instead of the long version. This way, you can remember the ideas and be able to show that they are really your own ideas. It will also make your essay easier to read, which will also help with your career. In conclusion, if you're looking to write an essay in the USA, or anywhere else for that matter, I recommend that you take a look at some of the material that is available for free online. Also, read some general rules that apply to any kind of essay writing, whether it is for school or work. The information that you can find online will be beneficial to both your essay and your career.

Affirmative Action Has It Run Its Course Essays - Social Inequality

Affirmative Action Has It Run Its Course It is a mistake to assume that the Negro, who had been a slave for two hundred and fifty years, gained his freedom by the signing, on a certain date, of a certain paper by the President of the United States. It is a mistake to assume that one man can, in any true sense, give freedom to another. Freedom, in a larger and higher sense, every man must gain for himself. Booker T. Washington In his Autobiography The problem in a realistic model of Affirmative Action is due to the history, political evolution and complicated definition. Affirmative Action as such has never been a law or even government policy. Affirmative Action has been comprised of a series of executive orders, governmental programs, civil rights laws, and enforcement of equal opportunity practices. The basis for Affirmative Action dates as far back as, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which stated all persons within the jurisdiction of the United States shall have the same right in every State and Territory, to make and enforce contracts, to sue, be parties, give evidence, and to the full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of persons and property as is enjoyed by white citizens?( Marable, 4). Then in 1941, F.D.R. signed Executive order 8802, which outlawed discriminatory hiring practices by defense related industries holding federal contracts. Subsequently President Truman formed the Government Contract Compliance Committee that advocated the Bureau of Employment Security to act confidently and in a positive manner to execute the guiding principle of nondiscrimination in its role of placement counseling. Therefore the word Affirmative Action was not used until President Kennedy's executive order 10925 in 1961. The basic idea to eliminate prejudices has been around for over a century. I believe that when President Kennedy established Affirmative Action it was a necessary and crucial piece in helping the Civil Rights Act. Now 39 years later, I feel that it is outdated and allows prejudices to continue. Although the initial purpose of affirmative action programs was to give more blacks access to the job market, statistics indicate that the major effects of such race-preferential policies has been a redistribution of black workers from small and medium sized firms to large companies and federal jobs. Black unemployment rates have remained twice those of whites (Samuelson). I feel that affirmative action policies failed to do what they were intended to do, but they have often provided opportunities to abuse the system. Opportunism disguised as affirmative action has extended across racial and political boundaries. Those who have taken advantage of this include the former black mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, Henry Gantt, as well as white executives such as President Reagans labor secretary, Ray Donovan. When Donovan was brought upon charges that he had set up a facade of minority ownership for a company he owned, they were dropped by the judge who cited prevalence of the practice (Woodson, 114). The focus on race-preferential policies has had damaging consequences more than the opportunism it has generated. These policies assume that race is a disadvantage, and that this is justification for compensation by white society. Before something can be a compensation it must first be a benefit (Sowell, 420). Sowell goes on to describe that the income of blacks comparative to whites reached its peak before affirmative action hiring and has declined since. The median income of blacks reached a peak of 60.9 per cent of the median income of whites in 1970. This was a year before goals and timetables became a part of affirmative action (Sowell, 419). These race preferential policies are allowing people to not take responsibility for their actions. It allows them to rely on the system rather than being motivated and determined. I think that the system has failed minorities and women because of the perceptions others may have of them and it then raises questions in their own minds. Was I really the best-qualified candidate or did they need to meet a quota? Many people in the workplace question the manner in which their jobs were obtained. I feel that it has to be degrading to feel as if you did not deserve the job

Comparative Criminal Justice Systems Essays

Comparative Criminal Justice Systems Essays Comparative Criminal Justice Systems Essay Comparative Criminal Justice Systems Essay The goal of socialism is to minimize people’s suffering through public control of industry and social services; socialism rejects class-based society (TheFreeDictionary, 2010). Socialism promises prosperity, equality, and security to the people. However, in many cases socialism has brought poverty, misery, and tyranny to the people; equality is achieved in the sense that everyone is equal in misery (Perry, 1995, June). Key characteristics of the socialist system in Sweden and Russia are described in this paper, and advantages and disadvantages of the system are discussed. In 1917 the Russian Revolution overthrew the czarist regime that ruled the Russian Empire. The new leaders created the Soviet Union and attempted to establish a socialist state based on the writings of Karl Marx. However, Marx did not explain how the socialist system would function. Without a blueprint for establishing the socialist system, the leaders of the new regime of Russia struggled to invent one. Under its socialist system, the government of Russia declared its ownership of most businesses and forced peasants to turn over a share of their output to the government. This â€Å"war communism† allowed the government to take control of production and distribution of goods (Rittenberg Tregarthen, 2009, April). The new government replaced elected officials with its own, â€Å"took over† land, banks, insurance companies, and large factories. The new regime destroyed the pre-revolutionary legal structure of the Russian economy. The program of â€Å"war communism† devastated the economy and the people lived in poverty, tyranny, and misery. In 1921 Soviet communist leader Vladimir Lenin restored the legal basis necessary for the Russian economy to function, and he ordered that the government draft and enact a civil code based on western European civil law (Maggs, 2010). Russia and Sweden are socialist countries governed by European civil law. Socialism is an economic system that exists in environments where resources are plentiful, or populations are extremely small. Advantages of socialism include (Free, 1995): Socialism provides every member with survival needs, creating a stable social environment. Members who cannot participate economically because of disabilities, age, or illness are provided with survival needs by the government. Mandatory paid sick leave for an indefinite amount of time (Cooper, 2009, April 23). Unemployment rates low because of active labor market policies – including subsidized employment, training, and job search assistance (Card, Kluve, Weber, 2009, February). Providing members with à ¢â‚¬Å"cradle to grave† benefits includes free universal health care, dental care, free education, and child-care; however, these benefits are not â€Å"free. Sweden, commonly known as a â€Å"welfare state† levies a 57% income tax on its workers to pay for these benefits (Cooper, 2009, April 23). Although Swedish hospitals rank among the best in the world, waiting times are also the longest in Europe. In August 2007, approximately 33,000 people had been waiting more than three months for surgery or other major treatments. Waiting times for emergency care in the overcrowded hospitals was approximately four hours. Medical resources in Sweden are strained by the continued rising demand. More than 5% of Swedes are at least 80 and receiving pensions, and the overall population of Sweden has increased by 9% in the past 20 years (Magnusson, 2008, January 24). Swedes receive 80% of their salary while on sick leave. Abuse of sick leave is rampart, and at any given time at least 10% of Swedes are on sick leave. Over three-fifths of these workers tell pollsters they take leave when they have no health issues (Cooper, 2009, April 23). In 2006 Sweden had an official unemployment rate of 6% mainly because of active labor market policies. The government provides training to the unemployed, assist with job search, and sometimes creates jobs in the public sector for the unemployed (Cooper, 2009, April 23). However, this â€Å"coddling† from the government creates a lack of incentives for workers to work harder and to â€Å"fend† for their selves. The socialistic system provides no inherent incentive to participate; therefore, this makes the socialism internally unstable. The lack of incentives tends to make the socialistic system non-competitive, making them externally unstable (Free, 1995). References Card, D. Kluve, J. , Weber, A. (2009, February). Research Paper Topics - Finding the Root Causes

Research Paper Topics - Finding the Root CausesThere are a wide variety of research paper topics that can be used to study the black community. This can give a different perspective of the issues and challenges in the community. Often times, there are specific problems that affect the black community in one area or another that is very important to address. Research paper topics such as housing discrimination, job opportunities, and economic well-being can help the researchers in gaining new insights into the lives of the community. One of the more popular research topics is one that examines housing discrimination within the black community. Many of the black neighborhoods in the United States have found it hard to find rental units. Because of this, many of the black community's economic stability comes from their ability to stay in the family home. Unfortunately, most of these families still live in overcrowded housing. These research paper topics examine how this affects the commun ity. Sometimes, it is a result of the racist attitudes of landlords and other local individuals. Other times, this may be a direct result of the city government doing little to combat racial discrimination. The research paper topics on employment in the black community also fit in very well with the major research programs in the sociology department at a college or university. Most students who enroll in these programs focus their education on the areas of criminal justice, social welfare, and community relations. This particular topic examines why it is that the black community is underrepresented in jobs in certain positions. Often times, the reasons for this are either lack of preparation, or a negative stereotype about black people. Because of this, many organizations and businesses have hired black workers for jobs that they might not have thought to look for.In the past, studies often considered black men to be unintelligent and prone to violence. While this might be true in so me instances, it is certainly not true in the majority of cases. There are now studies that have shown that black males have a better shot at getting a job than any other demographic group. It is amazing that the black community is experiencing so much diversity all at once. With this many differences, it is important to keep these research paper topics in mind as you prepare your own research report.

Interview Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 14

Interview - Essay Example I also learned that teachers can make use of a great variety of tools in order to communicate. The methods available have naturally changed over the years with advances in technology. I learned though that despite these rapid changes the basis of teaching remains the same, and that is to clearly communicate in a way that can be understood by a diverse group of people. For students who do not have English as a first language it can be even harder. This is where extra effort is required on the part of the teacher, who should not place the same expectations on those students because of their lack of ability. I benefitted greatly from meeting with an expert because I was really able to do more than just scratch the surface and find the answer to questions that have always puzzled me. I am not sure that the teaching field will be my chosen career path, but it was still very interesting to get some quality time asking in-depth questions with an expert. The greatest benefit that I took from this interview was that teaching is not something that I should get myself into unless I am able to put my full heart and soul into it. If I just go along with the motions for a while then it wont be enough and my career would suffer as a result. Even though this might appear to be simple enough or common sense it was actually really good to hear about some real life experience and what can go wrong if the right attitude is not present. The surprising thing that I learned from this assignment is that the teaching field is far more competitive than I ever thought. I had always assumed that with a strong need for teachers there would be plenty to go around. In actual fact the teaching profession requires a lot of dedication and hard work. The pay is relatively low compared to other jobs of importance, but really the teaching field has the most potential of all because it will equip the students of today to become the leaders of tomorrow.
